Despite an Increase in Sports Betting Handle, NJ Gambling Numbers Flattened in October

The Division of Gaming Enforcement released its October report. It showed that NJ gambling numbers flattened due to the decrease in brick-and-mortar casino numbers. On the other hand, sports betting handle rebounded during the month.

Total casino win, a measure of brick-and-mortar casino income, was $220.6 million in October 2022, a 7.1 percent decline from October 2021. Total gaming income reported by casinos, racetracks, and partners last month was $445.7 million, a 0.7 percent decline from $448.7 million in October of the previous year.

Internet gambling had another banner month, with $147.2 million in gaming prizes, up 15.9 percent from last year.

And while that's up 22% from September, it's still down 18.6% from October of last year when $1.16B was wagered on sports. Breaking the $1 billion mark has become somewhat of a routine during football season in New Jersey, while the decline from last October may reflect external factors like consumer problems and more competition.

Bwager insiders also noted that the numbers demonstrate a shift in betting habits, with $987 million of the handle's bets put on mobile applications rather than at retail sportsbooks.

October's total sports betting income of $79.1 million was down 20.5% from September and 7.4% from October 2021. However, the gap decreased from online gambling income, which shot up by 13.7% month-over-month from October 2021. Like other gaming jurisdictions around the country, Atlantic City's casinos continue to see a significant portion of their gaming income come from online gambling.

The sportsbook pay per head reports for the previous month weren't exactly glowing. However, revenue from gambling in Atlantic City's casinos is expected to rise to a new high this year. In addition, year-to-date casino earnings are 11.5 percent more than they were this time last October.
